Vertical AI: why software built for one industry keeps attracting funding

Vesta raised $30M to bring AI agents to mortgage lenders. Why niche B2B software attracts investors, and how small IT teams can pick a market.

Vesta, which sells AI software to mortgage lenders, has announced a $30 million round to bring teams of AI agents into lending work. The story fits a pattern: general AI tools are everywhere, yet investors keep backing products that go deep into one industry. Those products often understand the documents, rules and approvals that a general-purpose assistant does not.

What “vertical” means in practice

A vertical product solves a narrow problem for one type of customer. It knows the vocabulary of its industry, connects to the systems its customers already use and builds in the rules that apply to them. For a buyer, that depth is worth more than a flashy demo.

The same logic applies to smaller projects. A booking system for dental clinics, a stock tool for craft breweries or a quote builder for installers can win customers that a general platform ignores.

How a small IT team can choose a market

  • Start with work you already understand. If your studio has built three e-shops for furniture sellers, that knowledge is a head start.
  • Count the manual steps. Ask ten potential customers which tasks take the most time each week. Repetitive, document-heavy work is the best candidate for automation.
  • Check the rules. Industries with licences, consumer protection duties or personal-data requirements are harder to enter, but they also keep competitors out.
  • Sell a pilot, not a platform. A fixed-price pilot for one process gives you real data, a reference customer and a clearer roadmap.
  • Plan integrations as a feature. Connections to accounting, CRM or payment systems often decide whether a customer switches to you.

Vertical software is not a guaranteed win. It rewards patience, domain knowledge and careful listening, and many web studios already have those skills.
