What to prepare before building a website: a checklist

A website is built faster when materials are ready. Goals, pages, copy, photos and access: the list that repeats in every project.
A website comes together faster when your materials are ready. Here is a list of things that repeat in every project.
The goal of the site
Decide what the site should do: bring enquiries, sell, or simply show who you are. The goal drives the page structure and the main button.
Structure and content
- A list of pages, for example home, services, about, contact.
- Copy for each page. It can be short, as long as it is true.
- Photos, a logo and brand colours.
- References or client contacts, if they agree.
Technical items
- The domain and access to it, if one exists.
- Access to the current site and e-mail.
- Details for the legal pages: company name, ID number and address.
What to clarify
Who will manage the site after launch, who approves the texts and by when they will be delivered. The most common delay is not in programming but in delivering materials.
