WooCommerce or a custom e-shop: how to decide

When WooCommerce is enough and when a custom e-shop pays off. Questions about products, integrations, shipping and maintenance that settle the choice.
Both options can run a good e-shop. The question is not which one is better, but which one fits how you sell. Here is how I look at it when a client asks.
When WooCommerce is enough
- You sell a catalogue of ordinary products with variants such as size and colour.
- Standard payment and delivery methods cover your needs.
- You want to manage products and orders yourself in a familiar admin.
- You want to launch sooner and keep the budget lower.
WooCommerce has a large ecosystem of extensions for payments, carriers and accounting, so many needs are met without writing new code. The trade-off is that every extension has to be updated and checked, and too many of them slow the shop down.
When a custom e-shop pays off
- Prices depend on the customer, the quantity or a complex rule.
- The shop must exchange data with your warehouse, accounting or CRM in a way ready-made extensions do not support.
- The ordering process is unusual, for example made-to-order products, bookings or subscriptions.
- You want full control of the design and the code, without depending on a theme.
A custom build costs more at the start. It can cost less over time if you would otherwise stack many extensions and workarounds.
Questions that settle it
- How many products do you have and how often do they change?
- Which systems must the shop connect to?
- Who will manage the shop day to day?
- What is the budget now, and what do you expect to change in a year?
If you are unsure, describe your case to me and I will say honestly which route fits. More about what I build is on the e-shop development page, and typical prices are in the article how much a website costs.
